Welcome Home, Ember — Three Legs, Zero Brakes

Ember, looking up

On September 23, our little black cat family grew to three.

Her name is Ember. She’s a girl, four and a half months old, and she came all the way from Southern California to join Vina and Ricky.

For a household that once believed Vina was meant to be an only cat, that sentence still feels a little unreal to type.

Three legs

Ember lost her right hind leg in an accident.

That’s the part of her story that usually comes first when people hear about her, so I want to get it out of the way early — because it is very much not the part of her story that she thinks is important.

Nobody told her that slows you down

The moment she arrived, she was off.

Zooming through every room. Exploring everything. If there was a version of this where a three-legged kitten spends her first day hiding and getting her bearings, Ember didn’t read that script.

And in between the laps, she was doing the other thing she clearly came here to do: trying her very best to make friends with her new siblings.

The Ricky plot twist

Here’s what we didn’t see coming.

If you read how Ricky came home, you know he is the engine of this house. He also has a bit of a temper. He is affectionate on his own terms and not a second before.

With Ember, he has been unbelievably gentle.

Patient. Careful. Looking out for her like a real big brother — the same boy who once got hissed at for a month straight by his own big sister, now the one doing the welcoming.

Just a couple of days in, they’re already sharing a bed.

Three black cats

Vina was an overlooked shelter cat. Ricky was an “energetic black kitty, still waiting.” Ember is a black kitten with three legs — which, if you’ve spent any time around rescue listings, you know is exactly the kind of cat who gets scrolled past twice.

All three of ours were somebody’s overlooked cat. Now they’re our angel, our chaos, and our brand-new little spark.

Three legs, three black cats, and a whole lot of love.

Welcome to the family, little one.
